Few topics generate such passionate discussion as that of recognition. Saying "thank you" or paying a compliment seems like such a simple act; however, it is also one of our least used. We simply do not give recognition as often as we should. Behavioral studies have shown that to maintain good behavior and performance, a praise-to-criticism ratio of 4:1 is needed. However, to change behavior, a higher ratio of 8:1 is required.
We have found that talking about recognition provides some benefit in a training session, but actually doing it adds new energy and power to the entire session. Therefore, we added this exercise years ago to our sessions, and the transformation has been dramatic. People "get it."
